AMBIENCE OF ECM at OHARA SANSO
1969年にマンフレート・アイヒャーがドイツ・ミュンヘンで創設したヨーロッパを代表する音楽レーベル、ECM(「Edition of Contemporary Music」の略)。”The Most Beautiful Sound Next To Silence
To mark the 55th anniversary of its founding, ECM Records held its first-ever exhibition in Japan, titled "Ambience of ECM". Following the initial edition at Kudan House in Tokyo, the second installment was hosted at Kyoto Shimbun's Ohara Sanso, nestled in the scenic landscape of Kyoto.
Founded in 1969 by Manfred Eicher in Munich, Germany, ECM—short for Edition of Contemporary Music—is one of Europe’s most iconic record labels. With the guiding concept of "The Most Beautiful Sound Next To Silence", ECM has captivated audiences around the world with its uniquely transparent sound, pristine audio quality, and refined visual aesthetics, particularly its striking album cover designs.
"Ambience of ECM" was conceived as a project to experience the ECM sound through environmental resonance. From Mal Waldron’s Free at Last (1969), ECM’s very first release, to classical and contemporary works from the ECM New Series, five curators selected music tailored to distinct listening spaces. Audio systems were specifically chosen for each setting, offering visitors a completely different listening experience in every space.
The exhibition also featured rare artworks brought from Germany, curated playlists by the participating selectors, and a special screening and talk event of the documentary film Music for Black Pigeons, which explores the elusive moment when jazz is born. Additionally, a string concert titled Shigeru Kishida Ambassador Strings, curated by Shigeru Kishida of the band Quruli, showcased classical pieces from the ECM New Series, performed live in an intimate setting.
Set against the serene backdrop of Ohara—one of Kyoto's most timeless rural landscapes—this immersive event invited visitors to engage all five senses in discovering the world of ECM, where sound, silence, art, and place converge.
